• Choi paints solitary figures in modern, rational interiors. Captured in moments of introspection, rest, or
reverie, their faces are generally hidden from the viewer’s sight, as is the case in this work
• While the interiors are rendered with meticulous detail, the garden glimpsed through the large bay
window is abstracted with bold brushstrokes, thus flattening any sense of perspective
• The shapes in the lower left panel of the window seem to mirror the silhouette of the figure. Similarly,
the graphic and chromatic treatment of the figure echoes that of the bay window; so that the
character and the landscape seem to be reflecting each other
• In Choi’s works, interiors often materialize the inner lives of the subjects she portrays, while glimpses
of the outside sometimes appear as illusions or fantasies. This tension is exemplified in her meticulous
rendering of interiors juxtaposed with abstracted landscapes, inviting viewers to contemplate the
interplay between reality and imagination
• Doors, windows, and stairs serve as interstitial spaces through which surreal elements infiltrate Choi’s
rational, modern interiors. She uses these openings to delve further into her subjects’ interiority
