Shuang Li studies the various mediums composing the contemporary digital landscape. Her work encompasses performance, interactive websites, sculpture and moving image installations.
Technique:
The baby fence sculpture is made of fibreglass and electro plated for the color effects. The process starts with making a negative cast out of foam. Fibreglass liquid is poured into the cast and after it has solidified, the base of the sculpture can be removed out of the cast. The base is hand polished and smoothed with repair paste, then electro-plated in the oven for a few times to achieve the iridescent finish. Sep 2022 YL
Description:
Li’s playful aesthetic contains a well executed tackiness, embodying a millennial nostalgia.
“Headfirst for Halos” mimics a section of a baby playpen. The piece was created while Li was locked out of her own country, unable to return to China because of Covid restrictions. The dog bone and large tear drop also borrow from the my-space aesthetic of the same era. This work reflects Li’s current explorations of the relationship between screen and body, and our virtual intimacies.
Blowing up this prosaic form as a large scale sculpture, Li broadens our conception of what qualifies as art.
Reference:
Continuing the millennial aesthetic, the piece shares its name with a song by the influential 2000s rock band, My Chemical Romance.
