Atoms themselves are so minute and transparent that they do not have any perceivable color. Mu’s use of color here therefore reveals this image as either painted from a diagram or as an artistic interpretation of an atomic structure. As part of Mu’s larger project to document the strange beauty of humanity’s technological advancements, this piece works in two ways. First it demonstrates how technology miraculously allows us an understanding of the infinitely small aspects of our reality. Secondly, the piece reveals the mysterious symmetries between the smallest and largest parts of our universe as Mu’s painting of an electron circling an atom immediately brings to mind the orbiting of celestial bodies in outer space.
