Except for a pair of anime-inspired eyes, the figure combines abstract, geometrical shapes characteristic of Ad Minoliti’s repertoire. A dappled application of paint adds depth and texture to the surface, which subverts the conventionally minimal aesthetic of historical modernism. Inspired by Donna Haraway’s A Cyborg Manifesto (1985), a seminal queer text which challenges the rigid boundaries between human, animal and machine, Minoliti’s fictional geometry is an attempt to represent living figures devoid of gender, age, class, or any feature leading to categorization, classification and discrimination. Made of interlocking shapes, the composition of MARVIN brings to mind a jigsaw puzzle or a construction toy. Using a joyful aesthetic reminiscent of the colors and shapes of childhood, the artist creates a world where warmness and softness are legitimate rhetorical strategies aimed at envisioning new heterotopias.
