Combining figurative elements such as a pair of eyes, a flower and a mustache, with geometric forms such as triangles, squares and circles, MARCUS belongs to Ad Minoliti’s repertoire of abstract, geometrical characters. Drawing from the visual language of modernism in order to challenge the hetero-masculinist legacies of modernist discourse, Minoliti disrupts its conventionally minimal aesthetic with a dappled application of paint as well as elements inspired by popular culture, such as anime eyes or a flower. Through their geometrical characters, the artist imagines utopic transhuman and genderqueer futures while maintaining and insisting on the universality of our shared humanity. The artist’s palette draws from the color code of Argentinian activist groups, such as brown for the anti-racist movement and green for the pro-choice campaign, two colors that dominate this work. Behind its apparent playfulness, Minoliti’s work remains politically loaded; there lies the artist’s prowess.
