• “Madre e hijo” translates to "mother and son” and in this painting a pair of wild cats appear to move across the frame, their dark bodies backdropped by luminescent hues of green Salvador does not pursue a realistic representation of the world and the contrasting color palette here is testament to this scene being instead the incarnation of his mythical imagination
• The brushwork and the arrangement of green hues in the background of the painting give the impression that the subjects are moving across the canvas – particularly in the lower right of the image as the lighter green appears to shift around the cat’s moving paw
• Salvador is inspired by Andean cosmology and it is worth noting that in Andean tradition Pumas symbolize a connectivity with the earth, as well as power, strength, wisdom, and intelligence
• Although reminiscent of Pumas, the animals are non-specific and instead allude to Andean traditions and myths that view animals as deities or spirits
• Salvador’s pieces often show animals in pairings and protective and/or interdependent relations, seen here as the mother cat carries her young on her body
• In this way, Salvador seeks to paint the harmony and interdependence of the natural world
