The Defenders of Reality Matt Greene

新闻稿
Javier Peres is very pleased to present The Defenders of Reality, the second Los Angeles solo exhibition by Matt Greene. Greene will present a new body of large- scale paintings and drawings.

Greene's new series of work addresses feminist identity and the possibilities that arise when a male painter centers on the loci of the feminine art. It is a rigorously personal investigation for the artist that yields some of his most direct and extraverted works to date. On the surface, Greene's large paintings exude a sexual sophistication that may appear to be a byproduct of an overactive male gaze, but to accuse him of such a straightforward non-charade would be like accusing Richter of painting blurry portraits. Greene begins and ends with visual re-creations of the contemporary subconscious, filtered through the relevant 20th Century psychologists and film directors. Rather than building with codified appropriation, Greene works with derivatives of what he believes to be true: pieces of his own life.

Matt Greene (b. 1972 Georgia) lives and works in Los Angeles and will be present for the opening. His work will be included in the upcoming exhibition "Eden's Edge" curated by Gary Garrels at The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles.

The Defenders of Reality will be on view at Peres Projects, Los Angeles  (969 Chung King Road, Los Angeles, California) through May 19, 2007. Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, from 11:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.
