The work of Rebecca Ackroyd (born 1987 in Cheltenham, UK, lives and works in Berlin and London) combines abstract and surreal elements, which are expressed in complex installations and sculptures made of synthetic resin, wood or plaster, but also in large-format paintings: The artist combines turbines and dreaming eyes as gouaches with abstract casts of her body or objects such as wigs, sunglasses or cages. Her works are based on theories of psychoanalysis and question fundamental aspects of the human experience of time, femininity and fertility.
In Period Drama, Ackroyd examines fragmented realities, the subconscious and the malleability of memory, while at the same time reflecting on their representation. The monograph is published on the occasion of Ackroyd's most recent exhibitions at the Kestner Gesellschaft (Period Drama, 2023/24) and as part of the 60th Venice Biennale (Mirror Stage, 2024).
