A sharp and precise horizon line divides the composition, thus creating a cross-like structure. Gray and bluish tones fill the surface, evoking an icy landscape. Paint is applied to the surface with lively and expressive brushstrokes characteristic of Munar’s work. The pale, matte, and powdery look of the distempered surface emulates frost, while enveloping the scene with a mysterious and ghostly atmosphere. The practice of Anton Munar, who pays great attention to the physicality of his works, is deeply rooted in the materials and landscapes that inspire him, in particular the island of Mallorca where he grew up. The cyclicality of nature, its seasons, and its constant regeneration fascinate him. His interest in the life cycle of all things can be found notably in his recycling of furniture, particularly old drawers like the one used for Con tus pies sobre la tierra / With your feet on the earth. By painting on old objects, Munar gives them a second life. Conversely, these objects infuse the artwork with an amplified temporal dimension. An invisible but potent thread connects the tree that was used to make this piece of furniture, the wooden drawer, and the representation of a leafless tree that breathes life into the discarded drawer. Life and death, origin and destination are intertwined both in the picture (winter marking the end of a year as much as the beginning of the next) and in its materiality itself.
