Behold the man, waiting for the man Mark Titchner
Past Exhibitions exhibition
Press release
Peres Projects is very pleased to present Mark Titchner in his first solo exhibition in the U.S. Titchner's interest lies in the systems of belief that inform contemporary culture.
In creating his sculptures, videos, and text based works, he combines references to science and religion/mysticism with popular music and western philosophies with historical and current political movements. Visually, he references optical art, British trade union banners, futurism as well as the designs of William Morris. Other important references include baroque religious art as well as 60's psychedelic rock posters. Titchner's combination of complex references results in a unique kind of secular spiritual aesthetic that leaves the viewer with an overload of visuals and content that work simultaneously in conflict and in harmony.
For “Behold the man, waiting for the man”, Titchner will present a new body of work consisting of large scale banners and sculptures in the gallery's main level, with smaller scale sculptures, a large light box diptych and a new video in gallery 2. For his sculptures, Titchner often employs a method of production that seems pre-mechanical and antiquated while his text based and video works, all digitally created, owe much to corporate and political advertising strategies employed throughout the 20th and now into the 21st century.
Mark Titchner (b. 1973, Luton, UK) lives and works in London. His work has been widely exhibited at important international venues, including Tate Liverpool, Tate Britain, The Institute of Contemporary Art, London, The Groninger Museum (The Netherlands), Museum Morsbroich (Germany), Lehnbachhaus Munich (Germany), State Russian Museum (Russia), Museo Rufino Tamayo (Mexico), and De Appel (The Netherlands). Tichner recently presented works in his 4th solo exhibition with London's Vilma Gold Gallery, and has upcoming solos exhibitions at Vacio 9 (Madrid, Spain) and The Breeder (Athens, Greece). An artist's book written and illustrated by Mark Titchner, entitled "Why and Why Not", was recently published by Bookworks, London and is available at the gallery.
