Through his painted figures Jeremy investigates the expansive and fluid nature of queer and non-normative identities. The strong and saturated colors in his works, combined with the often somber or neutral facial expressions of his subjects, convey an intensity oscillating between vibrancy and darkness. Rendered against abstract and flat backgrounds, figures are the focus of his compositions. The twisted and stretched bodies are evocative of an abjection that draws from magical realism and European surrealism. Fundamentally, Jeremy is interested in the essence of what makes our bodies human: how far can a body be stretched, pushed or manipulated, and still be considered human? These questions are posed through the lens of queerness… positing a future where we are all both one and the “other”. More than a set of determined physical attributes, the body becomes a space where political, allegorical and biological contradictions are renegotiated through a perpetual metamorphosis of the self, towards ever more inclusivity.
