퍼포먼스, 조각, 영상을 넘나드는 키얀 윌리엄스(1991년, 미국 뉴저지주 뉴어크)의 작업은 묵살된 역사를 발굴한다. 일상 속 재료의 전유와 변형의 비관습적 방법을 포함하는 파격적 방식에 매료된 작가는 전통적 기념비성과 국가적 상징성을 전복시킨다. 그렇게 함으로써 윌리엄스는 그것이 전달하고 찬양하는 헤게모니적 서술을 뿌리 뽑는다. 파편과 균열을 품은 작가의 작품은 고대 유적이나 유물을 연상시키는 동시에 쇠퇴와 복원력을 불러일으킨다. 제작, 해체, 재제작을 통해 윌리엄스는 틈을 채우고 권력의 역동성에 의문을 제기하는 구체화된 작품을 만든다. 특히, 흙은 윌리엄스가 미국의 역사와 정체성을 탐구하기 위해 사용하는 반복되는 재료이자 은유로, 신체와 땅을 형성하고 긴밀하게 엮는 역사적·지속적 힘을 발굴한다.
