OBSIDIAN MIRROR Donna Huanca
Past Exhibitions exhibition
Press release
Peres Projects is pleased to present OBSIDIAN MIRROR, Donna Huanca’s second solo exhibition at the gallery. The exhibition includes new sculpture, painting, sound and installation which are comprised of materials that reflect a direct relationship to our environment. Metal, sand, oil and minerals are alchemically combined, taking on new forms and grounding the viewers in the immediate.
The linear perspective of the gallery’s historic early Soviet exhibition space, is transformed into a meditative sand dune filled ecosystem. Walls of mirrors reflect and refract not only the works in the exhibition, but also the street environment seen through the large windows of the gallery, as well as the viewers themselves. The mirrored surfaces act as both a point of reflection and a safe harbor, a place to camouflage ourselves within the installation.
In this way, the exhibition represents a shift away from live public performances towards an evolved sculptural, painterly and immersive language which infuses the environment with a performative presence through its total envelopment of the viewer into succinct colors, materials and textures.
