Donna Huanca | OJOS OBSIDIANOS | Museo de Arte Zapopan, Mexico

Donna Huanca at Museo de Arte Zapopan, Mexico
Donna Huanca's solo exhibition OJOS OBSIDIANOS, curated by Maya Escárcega, is opening tomorrow, February 4 at Museo de Arte Zapopan in Mexico. Donna Huanca’s metalized totemic sculptures function as shelters, as resting lairs, as hideouts from the intensity of the gaze. By being reflected, the bodies that are visually present in the space are dissected and camouflaged. The gaze undergoes a sort of metamorphopsia owing to the antiseptic layer, whose clarity is apparent, but not crystal-clear, as it distorts the other living beings, the sculptures, and the paintings. The exhibition will run until July 16, 2023.

The body and skin are ongoing points of focus in Donna Huanca’s (b. 1980 in Chicago, US) work, where she employs them as both surface and material. Her immersive artworks source from deep in our planet, echoing the geology of earth and employing palettes drawn from the natural world. Structurally layered and dense, they embody an allegory of the fragmentation of our identities.
