Introduction

“WONDER IS SO UNDERVALUED IN TODAY’S WORLD. I AM ALWAYS WONDERING. IT’S INCREDIBLE! OUR WORDS BEING EXCHANGED VIA SATELLITES AND CABLES ALLOWING US TO TALK IN REAL-TIME.” FOR TAN, TECHNOLOGY IS SOMETHING DEEPLY SOCIAL, “I AM VERY INTERESTED IN HOW WE BUILD NETWORKS AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS. THIS IS WHAT’S CHANGING THE MOST, HOW WE COMMUNICATE AND INTERACT.”

– TAN MU / WonderlanD Magazine, 2022

Tan Mu’s (b. 1991 in Yantai, China) work is a reflection on the construction of socio-technological history, combined with the expression of a distinctly personal experience. As a witness and interpreter, her paintings and multidisciplinary work examine the concept of bodily and mediated presence in modern society. By delving into the process of microscopes, satellites, and human imagination, Tan Mu's art goes beyond practical machinery and iconography. Rather, she seeks to navigate the expansive human history of tool creation, the pursuit of truth, and the exploration of the unknown, maneuvering them into her lifetime and immediate environment.
