Los Angeles and Cologne are both media cities, both serving very much as the Face of their respective countries. In these distant lands, popular tastes are invented and new genres are refined, and despite their "second city" status, each has quietly grown into an irreplaceable artistic capital, thanks in no small part to the supportive (and risk-friendly) local institutions and collectors in the immediate and surrounding areas of Germany and California.
Both cities boast of an especially strong influence on the generation of artists that have emerged in the last decade-a variegated community of communities, whose ideological links are much stronger than any shared formal concern. Perhaps then it is no coincidence that the patriarchs of today's L.A. and Cologne famously bonded in their formative years: most famously Mike Kelley and Martin Kippenberger but also a strong cast including Albert Oehlen, Christopher Williams, Stephen Prina, Cosima von Bonin, Michael Krebber, Jutta Koether, and Louise Lawler.
In the spirit of this historic bond, Javier Peres is pleased to announce the participation of Peres Projects with Patrick Painter and Reiner Opoku in "My Generation," a re-patriotization to Cologne by the two preeminent art galleries of Los Angeles, 2008. "My Generation," curated by Peres, Painter and Opoku, is a plenum*, an unapologetic redress of the commercial conditions that have turned art fairs into curse words in recent years, and a battle cry of today's most challenging work. Terence Koh's Dick Cave, 2007, an experiential environment created for the artist's "Blame Canada" exhibition in Berlin, will reside amid the imperfectly sublime abstractions of Andre Butzer, while the aggressively feminine video works of Agathe Snow counter-balance the biting wit of Douglas Gordon.
"My Generation" will take place during Art Cologne at the Spichernhofe (Spichernstrasse 8, D-50672 Koln), from 15 April to 20 April, 2008, with a vernissage on 15 April from 8:00 pm � 12:00 am. For more information please contact Jessica Backus at +49 30 6162 6962 or [email protected].

John KLECKNER (b. 1978, California. Lives in Berlin) John Kleckner creates proto-emotional pictorial phenomena that employ metaphors of biology and evolutionary ecology. His works depict human beings in stages of transformation-to occupants of lush natural realms, to unexplained physical states, and to obscure crevices of metaphysics. They evoke a revelatory exposure of the artist and the inner self at large.
Terence KOH (b. 1980, China. Lives in NY, Beijing and Berlin) Terence Koh's work (sculptures, installations, performances, and artist books) address the beauty and sublime transcendence of emptiness, the intertwining of all realms of life and death, and the constellations of dark matter that create the isolate worlds in which we live.
Dean SAMESHIMA (b. 1972, California. Lives in Berlin) Dean Sameshima's subject matter deals in the currency of contemporary desire, nostalgia, vindication and accumulation, yet his works speak the language of seriality and the subversion of power structures. Like his earlier pop-forbear, Peter Roehr, Sameshima starts with the object, with the capacity of obsession it embodies and its imperative to be possessed.
Agathe SNOW (b. 1976, Corsica, France. Lives in NY) Based on narratives of environmental collapse, sexual dysfunction, religious or moral decay, and physical disorientation, Agathe Snow's work simultaneously invokes netherworlds of decrepit horror and suggestions for rescue, celebration, and survival.

Los Angeles und K�ln sind beides Medienst�dte, die das Bild ihrer jeweiligen Regionen pr�gen. In diesen weit auseinander liegenden St�dten wird sowohl der Massengeschmack umliegender Region definiert als auch neue Genres erfunden, erprobt und verfeinert. Auch Dank der manchmal durchaus risikofreudigen Unterst�tzung durch lokale und regionale Institutionen und Sammler konnten sich beide St�dte trotz ihres Status als Stadt zweiter Klasse zu wichtigen Kunstst�dten entwickeln.
Seit einem Jahrzehnt �ben beide St�dte einen starken Einfluss auf die aktuelle K�nstlergeneration aus: Eine Generation, welche eine vielf�ltige Gemeinschaft der Gemeinschaften bildet, die eher durch ihren ideologischen Zusammenhalt als durch formale Eigenschaften gekennzeichnet ist. So ist es kein Zufall, dass der heutige Kunstadel von Los Angeles und K�ln in seinen formativen Jahren starke Bande gekn�pft hat. An erster Stelle nat�rlich Mike Kelley und Martin Kippenberger aber auch Albert Oehlen, Christopher Williams, Stephen Prina, Cosima von Bonin, Michael Krebber, Jutta Koether und Lousie Lawler.
Im Geiste dieser geschichtlichen Verbindungen pr�sentieren Peres Projects in Zusammenarbeit mit Patrick Painter und Rainer Opoku die Ausstellung �My Generation", mit der eben jene Sensibilit�t durch die beiden f�hrenden Galerien Los Angeles' in K�ln verortet wird. �My Generation" kuratiert von Peres Projects, Painter und Opoku ist ein Plenum* und ein kompromissloser Versuch, der durch den Kommerz der letzen Jahren degenerierten Kunstmessen etwas entgegenzusetzen. So l�sst sich die Ausstellung als eine Kampfansage verstehen.
Terence Kohs Dick Cave (2007), eine erfahrbare Umwelt seiner Berliner Ausstellung �Blame Canada", und die unvollendete und erhabene Abstraktion Andre Butzers werden neben einander gestellt, w�hrend die aggressive Weiblichkeit der Videoarbeiten von Agathe Snow ein Gegengewicht zum bissigen Humor von Douglas Gordon bildet.

John KLECKNER (geb. 1978 in Kalifornien, lebt in Berlin) verwendet Metaphern aus der Biologie und evolution�ren �kologie, um proto-emotionelle Bildph�nomene zu kreieren. Seine Werke stellen Menschen in verschiedenen Verwandlungsstadien dar: Mal werden Menschen in Bewohner �ppiger Naturlandschaften verwandelt, mal geht es um die Verwandlung in unerkl�rliche physikalische Zust�nde oder vernebelte Ecken der Metaphysik. Die Werke rufen eine offenbarende Entbl��ung des K�nstlers und des inneren Selbst an sich hervor.

Lebt in New York, Beijing und Berlin) Terence Kohs Arbeit (Skulpturen, Installationen, Performance und K�nstler B�cher) befassen sich mit der Sch�nheit und der erhabenen Transzendenz der Leere, mit den ineinander greifenden Bereichen von Leben und Tod und den Konstellationen von schwarzer Materie aus der unsere isolierten Welten bestehen.
Das Sujet von Dean SAMESHIMA (geb. 1972 Kalifornien, lebt in Berlin) kreist um zeitgen�ssische Begierden, nostalgische Tendenzen und die Besessenheit, Liebe und Anerkennung zu besitzen. Seine Arbeiten sprechen jedoch die sachliche Sprache der Serialit�t und Subversion von Machtstrukturen. Wie ein Vorl�ufer der Pop-Art, Peter Roehr, beginnt Sameshima mit dem Objekt: einem Objekt, welches sowohl Besessenheit verk�rpert als auch den Anspruch stellt, besessen zu werden.
Das Werk von Agathe SNOW (geb. 1976 Korsika, Lebt in New York) basiert auf dem Verfall der Umwelt, sexueller Fehlfunktion, religi�ser und moralischer Verwesung, sowie physischer Verwirrung. Zwar schaffen ihre Arbeiten eine Unterwelt von Zerfall und Horror, bieten jedoch gleichzeitig Erl�sung, Jubel und �berlebensm�glichkeiten.
