Introduction

"INSPIRATION CAN COME FROM MANY DIFFERENT SOURCES LIKE FILMS, BOOKS, HISTORICAL REFERENCES, UNEXPECTED SPACES OR ORDINARY PLACES. AFTER LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE PROCESS OF GEORGES PEREC, I DELVED DEEPER INTO A MORE SYSTEMATIC WAY OF MAPPING MY VOCABULARY."

Rafa Silvares in a conversation with David Alarcón , 2021 - METAL MAGAZINE, 2021

Rafa Silvares (b. 1984 in Santos, Brazil) lives and works in Berlin. He earned degrees in Fine Arts from Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado, São Paulo, and in Language and Literature from FFLCH University of São Paulo. His practice thematizes the fixtures of urban life, depicting the inanimate in motion – a burning pan, running faucet, steaming pipes. Through vibrant colors and gentle gradients, the starkness of his industrialized landscapes is rendered playful and engaging, while industrial textures such as metal and plastic are rendered rounded and soft. The structural and architectural shapes that populate his works are both minimal and abundant, facilitating an exploration of the spatial qualities of the canvas surface.
