Introduction

"I’M NOT INTERESTED IN QUESTIONING THE VIABILITY OF THE AMERICAN DREAM. IT’S JUST A SIDE EFFECT OF EXPERIMENTING WITH DISTORTIONS OF THE ICON, TO SEE WHAT FEELINGS AND IDEATIONS ARE EXPERIENCED BY VIEWERS."

– Mark Flood in Conversation w/ David Alarcón, Metal Magazine, 2023

Mark Flood (b. 1957 in Houston, US) approaches his interdisciplinary practice with a satirical sense of humor. Often turning to the internet for source material, Flood appropriates, distorts and parodies viral images and corporate logos in order to draw attention to the function of mass media, at once making a joke and raising a facetious mirror to society. This interest in representation and the power of images has motivated the majority of Flood’s artistic career, evident across the spectrum of his visual language, from his lace paintings — on which delicate, paint-soaked ribbons of cloth construct intricate frames around empty canvas —to his silk screened paintings of bloated and abstract masses formed of silhouetted hands.
